“It’s like the best Etsy treasury ever, live, in the grounds of a beautiful shrine!” That’s how Hannah described the handmade fair at Kamigamo Jinjya.
Kamigamo Shrine – World Heritage Site and host of the monthly handmade craft fair
Lighting designer Hannah Nunn and her friend and gift shop owner Natalie Seager came out to Japan recently on an inspiration and research trip. We spent lots of time exploring Kyoto together, and could not resist this craft fair, which runs on the fourth Sunday of every month and features more than 200 tiny shops. Designer makers from all over this part of the country came to sell their gorgeous wares – everything from clothes and jewellery to ceramics and stationery. Here is a selection of those that caught my eye…
Ceramics by Sanchagamo
Tiny houses by Monomaru
Furniture for little people by Mokukoubou Hiroi
Sweet knits from Chi Chi
Adorable stamps from Tao
Lovely little details from staccato (a friend from Kawashima Textile School)
Crafting is massive in Japan and selling handmade goods is on the up. Japanese alternatives to Etsy include tetote, iichi and tzkuri. Have a look at some of the loveliness tucked away there!
