Zen temple Ryoanji is home to one of the world’s most famous raked sand gardens. It is a wonderful place to sit and contemplate, whilst trying to count the rocks in the garden (apparently it is impossible to see all of them from any single position).
Personally I love this place for different reasons – the gentle pink lotus flowers in the lake, the rough but beautiful wabi-sabi walls around the garden, the wall-less wooden temple building which lets cool air pass through.

Whatever your point of view, Ryoanji is a wonderful place to seek out some calm in this ancient city.
