What comes to mind when you hear the word ‘Japan’?
Geisha? Bullet trains? Sushi? Karaoke? Temples? Manga? Mount Fuji? Hello Kitty? (I’d love to know by the way – please do share in the comments below!)
Whatever it is, I bet it isn’t ‘sand dunes’… so you can imagine how weird it is to find yourself in the middle of a tiny desert landscape (complete with shipped-in camels) next to the sea.
I must admit we thought it was going to be a bit of a horrible touristy experience, but actually had a brilliant time running (and screaming with laughter as we went) face first down the dunes, then climbing back up them, all with the sea breeze in our hair and a lot of sand in our toes.
These are the Tottori sand dunes, rolling hills of browny-orange where the sand meets the sea – something I have only ever seen in Namibia before.
Perhaps not what you would expect in Japan, but another fun adventure all the same!
